Season in Review

Markinson Cup

Amer is the champion of champions! He beat Dean by 60 on the points tiebreaker after both went 10-4 on the season. Amer now has the career Treble: Markinson Cup, Dufresne Championship, Dufresne Cup. Congratulations, Amer! All that's left to complete the career Quadruple is the Starling Cup.

As for Dean, he continues his remarkably consistent yet agonizing run. After his Dufresne Championship in the inaugural 2006 season, he has failed to win another major trophy, finishing runner-up an unbelievable six times(!!!):

2006 Dufresne Cup
2007 Markinson Cup
2007 Dufresne Championships
2007 Dufresne Cup
2008 Markinson Cup
2008 Dufresne Cup

His worst finish in anything was third in this season's Dufresne Championships. And as his luck would have it, it didn't even qualify him for next season's Markinson Cup! Jason leapfrogged him with his Dufresne Cup win, and Amer leapfrogged him with his Markinson Cup win. Ridiculous.

Montoya Championships

Lisa denied Scott his second league title, beating him on the points tie-breaker by a healthy 130 after the two finished with identical 10-4 records. Hubert dropped from his customary second position to finish third, despite topping the league in points. And Gina eeked me out by four stinking points to grab the all-important fourth place, allowing her to qualify for her first Markinson Cup! Lisa qualified for her second, and Scott and Hubert maintained their perfect qualification records, three for three.

Lisa and Jeremy swapped first and last place finishes from last season to this one. It makes me consider allowing managers to pick their draft position in order of finish rather than locking them in. The idea was supposed to be to reward the top teams. Hmm. Then again, Jeremy finished with the lowest point total ever, so it wasn't all draft.

Dufresne Championships

Eddy was the surprise of the season, dominating the league wire to wire to grab his first title and qualify for his first Markinson Cup. Drew was also a first-time qualifier after coming in second, despite the second-lowest point total in the league. As detailed above, Dean finished third but won't be going to Markinson for the first time. Terrible luck. Instead, Jason will be going to his third, and Amer will be headed to his second.

Eddy joined Lisa in going from worst to first. Clearly eight was the sweet spot of this year's draft. :)

Starling Cup

For the first time, the Starling Cup is headed to Dufresne. Eddy beat out Hubert by 28 points, with Lisa another 20 points back. Eddy's point total was the lowest winning amount by almost 180 points, but I doubt he cares. :) Hubert failed to become the first non-league champion to win the Starling Cup.

Montoya Cup

One thing Hubert never fails to win is the League Cup. For the third straight season, Hubert won the Montoya Cup, and for the third straight season, he didn't need the automatic qualification himself but nonetheless crushed the hopes of the fifth place team in the final (me this time, Andrew the previous two times). Gina couldn't have been happier.

Hubert has now won a ridiculous 9 Montoya Cup games in a row. And counting.

Dufresne Cup

Jason won his second Dufresne Cup in three years, and in doing so he leapfrogged runner-up Dean for next year's Markinson with the automatic qualification. It was the first time that the winner needed the victory to leapfrog into Markinson.

Records and Miscellaneous

No major records fell this year.

Eddy tied Amer and Dean for most wins in a Dufresne League season, with 11. The other season records went untouched.

The closest anyone came this year to Dean's 22 total wins in 2007 was... Dean, with 20. And Hubert, also with 20. Hubert was also the closest to Jason's 3478.98 points in 2007, but with 3030.18, he wasn't even in the same neighborhood. Point totals were relatively low this season.

Not surprisingly, Dean is the career wins leader with 54, 2 better than Hubert. But that will likely change next season with Hubert playing an extra 14 games. Amazingly, Dean still has a good chance of holding onto second place even after next season.

Lisa was the big gainer in the record books this season. She has established herself as the clear #3 team in Montoya, holding down third in career wins and points behind the two powerhouses.

What is the most unbreakable record? Dean's 22 wins? Jason's 3479 points? Both will be tough to beat for sure, but it's hard to imagine anyone ever matching Scott's 2059 premier league points in 2006. Or his 13 wins that season, all in a row. Or his 10 Heinekens. Or his 207.78 points in a single game. Or his 130-point victory. What a ridiculous, absurd season that was.

Then again, I cannot even fathom anyone ever winning 9 straight League Cup games again, ever. And I'm betting Hubert extends that record into double digits next season. Talk about nonsense.

Well, that's all, folks. Thanks for a great season, and congrats to all the big winners: Lisa, Eddy, Hubert, Jason, and especially Amer, the champion of champions. I can't wait to do it again next year!
