Week 1 Recap

Reminder that the week now starts on Thursday, so if you have any Patriots or Jets, make sure your lineup is set.  And if you have any Jets, just give up now.

Markinson Cup

Hubert won his 34th career Heineken (second all time behind Dean's 40) and came within half a point of breaking his own record for points in a Markinson game, scoring a ridiculous 189 thanks to Peyton, Demaryius, and LeSean, among others.  That was 75 points more than he needed against me.

Jeremy also had a monster week with a 166-125 win over Dean.  Nalu beat Lisa by 42, and Jason beat Vineet by 12.

Montoya Championship

I won my 27th career Heineken (third all time) in a 161-143 win over Hubert, who had the misfortune of having the second-highest point total and losing.

Gina rode Peyton's 60 points to a 138-130 win over Andrew.  Lisa crushed Scott by 40, and Dan beat Jeremy by 14.

Dufresne Championship

Nalu took the Heineken with a 158-114 win over Russell.  He was also the only one to go 2-0 this week.

Dean took out Vineet 142-106.  Amer squeaked by Jason by 3 points, and in a battle between the two newest managers, Steve beat Jeff by 13.  Welcome to the big time, rookie.

Playoffs - First Round Recap

Montoya Cup

Scott pummeled me, and Dan did the same to Lisa, keeping both of them alive to steal Lisa's spot in Markinson.

Lisa will be rooting for the top two seeds, Jeremy and Hubert, to take care of business in the next round and lock up her spot.  Jeremy trounced Gina in round 1 and will face Scott next.  And Hubert gets Dan after taking down Andrew.

So Gina and Andrew have been eliminated from contention for next year's Markinson, and the final spot is between Lisa, Scott and Dan.

Dufresne Cup

Nalu had a good week, but he's not quite out of the woods yet.  One spoiler is lurking, and that is Steve, who comfortably knocked out Jason to keep alive his hopes of losing the title "Greatest manager to not make Markinson."  Also "Only manager to not make Markinson."

Steve now goes up against the legend himself, Dean, who pulverized Russell's Millennium Falcons.

Nalu took out maybe the scariest spoiler in Amer, in the process extending his Dufresne record Cup streak to 6.  Next up, Nalu faces upstart champion Vineet, who got by Drew.

Drew, Russell and Amer are out of contention, and the final spot is between Nalu and Steve.

Good luck all!

2012 Regular Season Recap

We've wrapped up another regular season, and with the weekly updates mysteriously disappearing, there's a lot to catch up on!

Markinson Cup

It came down to the final week, and I needed either a win over Dean or a Vineet loss to Hubert to clinch my second champions league title.  In the end I got both to win the league by two games over Hubert.  Hubert led the league in scoring but was the runner-up for the fourth straight season!  He's still looking for that elusive first Markinson Cup, while I'm the first manager to win a second.

I was 3-4 at the halfway point but finished the season on a 7-game win streak.  If either Hubert or Vineet had beaten me during that stretch, they would have won the title on the points tie breaker.  I finished third in scoring behind those two but won the most Heinekens with four.

Montoya

The Montoya league championship also came down to the last week, with Hubert controlling his own destiny.  If he beat Lisa he would repeat as league champion, the first manager to do so.  A loss would open the door to Jeremy, who would need to beat Gina for his second league title.  Hubert faltered and Jeremy prevailed, meaning that just as in Markinson, Hubert would have to settle for second place despite leading the league in scoring.  Also as in Markinson, it was his fourth runner-up finish!

Jeremy pointed out to me that he won despite finishing just 6th in points and winning in weeks 1, 2, 4 and 13 by a combined 6.14 points!  He also had the fewest points against for the season.  He hadn't won a Heineken until this very last week of the season, and naturally he won it by only 0.24 points.  Hubert, by comparison, won six Heinekens.  But you are what your record says you are, and the record says Jeremy is the first to win two Montoya league championships.

Jeremy also earns his fourth trip to Markinson, and Hubert keeps his perfect record intact with his remarkable seventh bid.  My Markinson title earns me my sixth bid, leaving one spot for the playoff winner.  Lisa is in the limbo spot after finishing third in the standings, hoping for her fourth bid.  Scott had his first winning season since 2008, but he'll need to win playoffs to get back into Markinson for the fourth time, thanks to the spot I stole.

Dufresne

Vineet won his first league title in just his second season, leaving no doubt by leading the league in scoring and topping Dean by one game.  Vineet is once again headed to Markinson and has established himself as a perennial threat in Dufresne.  Inconceivable?

He's still got a ways to go to match the consistency of Dean and Jason, who finished in their customary top-three positions and earned their sixth Markinson bids in seven tries.

Nalu is in limbo heading into playoffs, hoping to earn his third Markinson bid with either his third playoff title or a win by any of the top three.  Watch out for Amer, who had the third-highest point total but finished only fifth.  And Steve is the only manager still looking for his first Markinson bid.

Starling

Although Hubert failed to win a league title despite leading two leagues in scoring, he did post the highest point total in either premier league, earning him his first Starling Cup with 1750 points.  Vineet was second with 1708, followed not-so-closely by Jason, myself, Amer and Dan.

Records

Hubert's combined point total between premier league and champions league was just enough to topple one of the oldest records on the books.  His 3,481 combined points bettered Jason's record from 2007 by just 2 points!

Hubert also broke the Markinson single game points record with a whopping 190.24 in week 12.

That's all for now, folks.  Playoffs start this week, and everyone still has a shot to win a trophy and get into champions league, so stay sharp!  Good luck!

Records Through Season 6

Amazing that we've been through six seasons already!  Hubert owns almost all the totals records, in part due to his perfect Markinson qualification, but Dean still tops him in all the averages, as well as Heinekens.

Vineet, Nalu, Dan, and Lisa will have a great chance to move up on the overall wins and points lists after an extra 14 games in Markinson, while Hubert, Dean, Jason, and I should increase our stranglehold on the top 4 of both.

Playoff Recap

Another season has come to an end, our playoff champs are crowned, and the Markinson lineup is set for 2012!

Montoya

For the third time in six years, Andrew reached the Cup Finals with a chance to steal a Markinson bid, but like the previous two times, he came up short. Thanks mostly to Brees, I took out Scott, Lisa, and Andrew to win my second straight Montoya Cup, and in the process locked up Dan's first Markinson bid!

So Montoya's 2012 Markinson contingent will be Hubert (6th bid in 6 tries), Lisa (3/6), me (5/6), and Dan (1/6).

Dufresne

Vineet was able to breathe easy this last week after Nalu dispatched Russell, the last potential spoiler, in the semis. Nalu then took out Jason in the finals for his second Dufresne Cup in three years. Jason just missed out on tying Hubert with his third playoff cup.

After losing by 0.02 in the last week of the season to lose his auto bid, Amer lost his chance at stealing one when he fell to Russell in the first round by 0.86. Brutal stretch. He went on to win the consolation bracket, but this will be only the second time he's missed out on Champions League.

So the Dufresne contingent in Markinson next year will be Nalu (2/4), Dean (5/6), Vineet (1/1), and Jason (5/6).

Miscellaneous

In six years of Montoya Cups, 11 of the 12 finalist slots have been occupied by Hubert (3-1), Andrew (1-3), and me (2-1), with Scott (0-1) holding down the other slot.

The Cup finals records in Dufresne: Dean (0-4), Jason (2-1), Nalu (2-0), Amer (1-1), Drew (1-0).

With Dan and Vineet qualifying this year, Steve is now the lone manager still seeking his first Markinson bid.

Hubert and I tied for most wins this season with 20. Jason was third with 18. The standard remains Dean's 22 in 2007.

At 110 career wins, Hubert is the only manager to have crossed the century mark. Dean finished just short with 99.

After winning the consolation bracket last year, Nalu's Cup win this year gives him 5 Cup wins in a row, breaking Drew's record 4 straight that ended in the first round this year. I have now won 6 straight, but that's still an entire Cup win from matching Hubert's ridiculous 9 straight wins from 2006-2008. He's getting nervous though. :)

All right, that's a wrap on 2011. I'll send out updated career records, and then it's onto 2012! Thanks again to everyone for participating, and congratulations to all our winners!

Regular Season Recap

Markinson

Congrats again to Jason for being the best of the best. He ties the record for wins in a season with 11. Hubert finishes runner up for the THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR! He's the Stanford Heisman candidate of Markinson.

Montoya

Hubert FINALLY breaks through for his first league championship! After finishing 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, it's his turn to hoist the digital trophy. Strong side! Hubert is the sixth league winner in six seasons!

Lisa and I finish with wins to lock up our Markinson bids, Lisa's third, my fifth.

Dan has to sweat the playoffs for his first ever bid. He'll be rooting against Andrew, Scott, Gina, and Jeremy. No one in the bottom half of the standings has ever won Montoya Cup.

Dufresne

What a difference 2-hundredths of a point makes. Ouch.

Barring a point adjustment, Amer loses to Dean by that brutal margin, 130.10-130.08. Instead of locking up his fourth Markinson bid, Amer's loss, combined with Vineet's win over Nalu, drops him to 4th place and out of an automatic or even contingent Markinson bid. He'll have to win Dufresne Cup to earn his way in.

Dean's win locks up his fifth bid, and keeps him in the chase for Hubert's records. Vineet's win means he'll be sweating the playoffs to become the first newbie since Amer to qualify for Markinson in his first try. He'll be rooting against Amer, Russell, Steve, and Drew. It was just last year that Drew stole a Markinson bid from Russell, all the way from 7th place.

No one is playing better than Russell's Millennium Falcons. After starting the season 1-7, he won his sixth in a row to finish 7-7! He ain't much, but he's got it where it counts. He's fast enough for you, old man.

Starling

For the fourth time in six years, someone from Montoya wins Starling Cup. And in the end, it wasn't that close. Dan turned his 4-point lead over Nalu into a 50-point victory. Hubert finished another 10 points back.

So Dan is the first manager to win Starling without winning his league, and there's a chance he won't even make it into Markinson! But we have three weeks to go to see how this all plays out.

Good luck everyone! Still lots to play for. Last chance at a trophy, last chance at a bid!

Week 13 Update - One Week To Go!

Markinson

One game left, but this title is all wrapped up. Jason wins his first league championship, and it's the biggy! With it, he tilts the champions league back in Dufresne's favor, 3-2. One more win and he ties the record for Markinson wins in a season with 11.

Congrats to Jason, and he also earns an automatic bid to defend his title next season.

Dufresne

Congrats to Nalu as well, who also wraps up his first league championship! He sews up his second Markinson bid, which leaves only two remaining in Dufresne after Jason's Markinson win.

Amer, Dean, and Vineet all have a shot at finishing 2nd and locking up the third Markinson bid, with Steve a long shot. Whoever finishes 3rd will sweat the playoffs for that fourth bid.

Amer plays Dean, and a win would lock up a bid for Amer, and could lock one up for Dean.

Russell has made an amazing run with 5 straight wins after starting the season 0-6. He was a model of perseverance, but he'll need a playoff title to get the fourth bid. Drew pulled it off from 7th place last season, and he'll have to do it from 8th to earn a return trip.

Montoya

The title is still up for grabs. Hubert is in the driver's seat, and if he beats Gina or stays ahead of Lisa and me on points, he wins his first, and loooong-awaited, league championship!

Nonetheless, Hubert has locked up his record sixth straight Markinson bid, a perfect record!

That leaves 2 guaranteed spots up for grabs, between Lisa, me, and Dan. The odd man (or woman) out will finish 4th and have to sweat the playoffs, a scary proposition with Andrew sitting in 5th and winning Heinekens as the season winds down. Dan is still looking for his first bid, and after racing out to a 6-2 start and looking like a sure thing, he's limping to the finish line.

Starling

Looks like a two-horse race, with Dan holding a slim 4-point lead over Nalu, and Hubert another 50 points back. If Dan holds on, he'll be the first non-league champion to win the trophy.

Good luck! One more to go, and then playoffs!
